MONACO OLIO is located in Abruzzo (Region of central italy), in the territory of Tortoreto. It is was founded in 1970 by dr. Ruggero Monaco, a veterinarian who planted existing part of the olive grove. Later, in the '90s, his son Mauro, together with his wife Simona, took charge of the company and started with the production of organic extra-virgin olive oil.
The olive groves are located in a typically hilly area with mild climate, where the updrafts of Monti della Laga are migled with salt of the Adriatic coast. Thus, the ideal microclimate for growing olives is created. The olive grove is composed by 1000 trees including Leccino, Frantoio, Dritta, Pendolino, Carboncella and Tortiglione olive varieties.
The latter olive variety is the typical cultivar of the province of Teramo, widespread in the Tordino and Vomano river valley. The Tortiglione tree is a majestic plant with twisted trunk. The oil obtained from Tortiglione olives is characterized by a strong and pleasant aftertaste bitter.
The company can be reached via a trail used by farmers to bring their sheep to pasture, in the ancient time. The farm is isolated in the middle of a hill of olive trees but at the same time, we are close to the historic center of Tortoreto, excellence and blue flag beach resort. Tortoreto Country is a medieval village perched on a spur where you can enjoy a breathtaking view: the sea on one side, the Gran Sasso on the other. The Abruzzo, green region of Europe, needs no introduction.
The company carried brief encounters with tasting to combine information and entertainment on oil, to spread the culture and through it, the respect and love of nature.
